I love the dramatic backdrop for the pictures – what a great location to celebrate your wedding day!

Vanessa shared some of her tips with us for having a beautiful wedding on a budget…

The Dress: I bought my dress at The National Wedding Show at the NEC, so was ableto secure a 25% discount off the shop price.

The Flowers: All of the flowers were arranged by a family friend, so we only had to pay £60 for the flowers themselves including my bouquet and the bridesmaid’s flowers and centrepieces.

The Table Centrepieces: We bought all of the teapots, cups and saucers from car boot sales and charity shops in the run up to the wedding, so we only spent about £30 in total!

The Bridesmaids: We were able to get 30% off the bridesmaid dresses at BHS as we found money off vouchers online.

The Favours: My sister works in a boutique chocolate shop and so we were able to get a great discount on handmade chocolates. We then bought boxes and ribbons from EBay  for less than £20 to present them in for our guests.

A colourful wedding on a budget – Abby and Liam

Real life colourful budget wedding - Abby and Liam

I’m so excited to share this beautiful colourful wedding on a budget with you today! Abby and Liam got married on the 10th August last year on a £3k budget. Thanks to London Wedding Photographer Miki Photography for sharing this wedding with us.

Abby gives us the lowdown on her amazing day…

Liam and I met in the music mobile at High School - he was 12 and I was 13. We loved each other’s company from day one, and after brief canoodling Christmas ’03 and again in ’04... We finally got together during Summer ’05. As cheesy as it sounds, we knew right away we would always be together.

We decided not to have a wedding theme as it was simply because it was too much hassle. We literally chose something if we liked it, and hoped it wouldn’t look like a jumble sale on the day.

The aim for the wedding was just to make it as ‘us’ as possible. Why, on a day of celebrating the love of two individuals, would you not celebrate their individuality? I was determined not to become a Bridezilla! I purposefully tried to be easy going, knowing everything won’t be perfect and that numerous things could go wrong at any stage. The flowers in particular, it was a pretty big gamble deciding to grow all the flowers and although we did buy more – we ended up with much more than we knew what to do with!

We wanted the ceremony to be fun and light, so we wrote it ourselves with Chris, my brother in-law’s uncle. Chris was amazing! He was perfect for the job, and really made us feel at ease when all the eyes were staring. He got all the kids involved and shouting out, and made everyone laugh (and cry). When we exchanged rings, Chris read the ring inscription from Lord Of The Rings, and finished the ceremony on a quote from Harry Potter! It was brilliant.

I also really wanted to source as much as we could locally. I have seen the struggles of small business owners first hand, and knew that if I could get it locally, I would. Chris happened to live opposite a pretty awesome pub, and the owner Andy supplied a real ale bar for us on the day. The cake, food, flowers, dress, bowties, venue, hair, confetti, hay bales and any printing was also sourced locally or from Etsy. We were really pleased and surprised we could do so much in this way!

Being creative people, we knew there was no other option than to DIY. Of course this helped our budget greatly, but it also made it US. If we saw something we liked, we had it, regardless of colour/tradition/what other people expected. We also got rid some wedding traditions like cake cutting etc. It just wasn’t us. There were many frowns and ‘really?!’s from relatives along the way, but on the day everyone said how great it was. How it was a true reflection of us as people, and how all our hard work made it that extra bit special! We were shocked at how many people said it was the best wedding they have ever been to!

We made all the decorations ourselves. We spent nights hole punching circles, sewing garlands, making pom-poms, painting signs and glass jars, sorting pick & mix, creating kiddie goodie bags and wrapping thread around nails. It was SO much fun but a lot of work. We thought towards the end that we might not have enough, so near doubled what we had originally made. In the end most didn’t even get used! I made an awesome ‘All You Need Is Love’ banner that just would not stick to the wall! Countless teeny glitter flags, red hearts, pom-poms and tassels on sticks to go in the deserts that just got forgotten.

One of the best parts of the day for me was driving to the venue with my sister and Maisy - she was hilarious! Waving at everyone going past, giggling and making jokes. I really think I would have started to panic they weren’t making me laugh. I’m not very good being in the limelight! Another great memory is our first dance – we completely missed our song! We were supposed to have Bob Marley, but were too busy drinking whiskey on hay bales to hear it come on! We decided to have a quick dance when we heard Ed Sheeran, and everyone came and gathered around us cheering and taking pictures. It was perfect. It was also great to get millions of texts the following day from people waking up covered in glitter, with blow up guitars in their beds and jars of flowers on their windowsills!

Our photographer was the only thing we splashed on. We decided that with all the hard work we were putting in, we needed amazing pictures! I would have been gutted if after hours, weeks, and months of sitting in our spare room making all the little details – that they weren’t captured. I am so glad we did this! Miki was just amazing. We couldn’t count the number of people who came up to us during and after the wedding saying how awesome and lovely he was! Everyone has been blown away by his photographs. We are so glad we found him!

The biggest wedding savings came from the invitations and decorations. I made the invitations myself on Photoshop, after being inspired by something on Pinterest (as always!). It was a pain getting the colours right, as the printed version never matched what I saw on screen! But eventually they were perfect. We spent £80 in total (including postage!) for the invitations. The other huge saving was on decorations, as we made them all ourselves, we really only paid for a load of coloured card and tissue!

If I could go back and change anything, I would have been more organised on the day itself. We had a rough plan of timings etc, but we forgot to do a couple of things due to being distracted. This resulted in numerous people (including us) running round trying to find or fix things. We wish we had given someone else a plan of the day and a ‘do not forget’ list to keep us on track – it is very difficult to think of anything on the day as you are constantly being pulled left right and centre.

I really don’t think that a big budget is important. We had exactly what we wanted, at a fraction of the cost of most weddings. Don’t think that because it is a wedding, you have to go to wedding suppliers only! Don’t think that the kick ass dress you saw for £100 isn’t good enough because it’s cheap. If you like it, get it. It will all look amazing on the day, and no-one will know you spent an hour scrubbing the peanut butter label off the beautiful blue jar the flowers are in.

Thank you for sharing your amazing day with us Abby and Liam!

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

Todays real life black and white themed budget wedding took place at The Brecon Castle Hotel in South Wales. This lovely couple celebrated with their friends and family at a Black and White themed wedding that Sian had been dreaming of for years…

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

Tell us a little bit about how you met your fiancé and how you got engaged?

We meet through work, we worked in different departments so didn’t really interact with each other but we eventually met on a works night out. It took us a while to become an item, but we did and eventually moved in together.

We had a child and had recently moved into a new house so getting married just seemed the next logical step. We decided to get engaged whilst on Holidays in Tenby, we bought the ring, but Luke wouldn’t let me wear it until he had asked my dad properly and this turned into a bit of a comedy sketch as every time he went to ask my father, someone would interrupt! We eventually got engaged in a local Italian restaurant and of course I said YES!!

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

What was your favourite part of planning your wedding?

If I am completely honest I wasn’t the best wedding planner, I didn’t really enjoy all the hype and importance that was placed on every decision. I was a very laid back bride!  I didn’t really understand how the smallest things could turn some people into crazy women! My family were getting more stressed because I wasn’t moving fast enough for them!

I did however enjoy looking for a venue; we would book the visit with the venues wedding co-ordinator under my name, and then we would book a meal before we met the wedding planner in Luke’s name. That way we could taste the food and get a feel for the venue atmosphere without feeling that we were trying to be ‘wined and dined’ into choosing them. We could also get a feeling for the level of service provided, which for me was a bit part of the decision.

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

Did you have quite a tight budget to stick to and how did you make the most of it?

We didn’t have a strict budget although I was very money conscious through the whole process, I just felt having just bought a house and with having a small child, spending thousands of pounds on a wedding wouldn’t really be the best thing to do.

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

What is your best money saving tip for other brides on a budget?

Shop around! Our invitations were taken from an idea I found on a website but were actually printed in our local printers shop along with information cards & RSVP cards for a fraction of the price.

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

It doesn’t have to labelled as ‘wedding’ to be suitable for a wedding; for example, decorations and cards they may not scream wedding, but if you like them and they suit your theme, go with them.

Don’t feel like you have to use one company. I hired one company to do my chair covers and centre pieces, but they couldn’t provide the table clothes I wanted or the centre pieces I had in mind, so I found another local company and with a mixture of the two companies I got the look that I had been thinking about.

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

Winter is cheaper; we got married in Brecon at the end of November. I resigned myself to the fact the weather may not be the best, but the package the hotel provided was far better value than if we had held the wedding in the summer. My photographer was prepped for the wedding and had looked at the venue for photo opportunities should the weather take a turn for the worst. However, we couldn’t have asked for better! The sun was so bright that this actually caused the photographer problems!

Who were your favourite budget wedding suppliers?

Ebay! My bridesmaids dresses, decorations, table settings, veil, petticoat, flower girl wand, favours, all came off Ebay. My favours were hot chocolate cones, which I found on EBay made by a lady starting her business. She thankfully agreed to make my favours at a fraction of the cost and they were a massive hit. My bridesmaids dresses also came off EBay and were ridiculously cheap; I was apprehensive but thankfully my sister in law is a very good seamstress, so I figured if they were dreadful she could help. It turns out they were perfect and my sister in law said she couldn’t have bought the fabric for the price I paid for the dresses.

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

What did you enjoy most on your wedding day?

I was so nervous, but when we sat down for the wedding breakfast, I looked around at all our family and friends having a good time, and thought, that’s why I’ve done this! All I wanted out of my day was that everyone enjoyed themselves and were relaxed and could have fun.

Did you have a theme for your wedding day and if so, how did you decide on it?

The theme for the wedding was black and white; that has always been the theme that I knew I would have. But I wanted it too look romantic as well as classic. So I opted for candle and white feather centrepieces on black table clothes to soften the look slightly. I also opted for one shoulder flowing dresses for the bridesmaids to create a softer look.

Black and White Themed Budget Wedding: Sian and Luke

What would be your best piece of advice for all of our other Budget Bride Company readers?

Relax! Hire a venue that you feel comfortable in and if they have a wedding planner available, make use of them. Brecon castle hotel had a wedding planner called Sam, she was absolutely amazing! Everything ran like clockwork because of her and her team. Call in favours, if you family or friends that can make something that will save you money, ask them.

Congratulations Sian and Luke – what an amazing wedding day on a budget 🙂

Real Life Budget Wedding – Karla and James

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

Todays Real Life Budget Wedding is with Karla and James who married with a budget of £5,000 on the 27th August last Summer near Chichester.

Karla and James created an incredible wedding celebration planned during a seven month engagement. Karla told us a bit more about how she created the wedding she dreamt of on the budget she had available…

Tell us a little bit about how you met your fiancé and how you got engaged?

James and I knew of each other from school but got talking when I was on a night out with my cousin. She also met her fiancé that night! We got engaged the day before my 25th birthday, after a walk in the snow near Arundel Castle. I knew something was up as we're not normally people who go for walks for fun! The engagement was only 7 months and so we had been together 3 years when we got married.

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

What was your favourite part of planning your wedding?

I enjoyed most of it, especially buying things - I loved receiving packages! My favourite parts were ordering my dress, looking at venues, getting together with the girls and planning the hen night, making food with my mum and eating trial cake!

What was your wedding Budget and how did you make the most of it?

Our budget was £5,000. We saved most of the money on the Ceremony and Reception venues and also the catering. We had a gorgeous ceremony at Wiston House, Steyning and stayed for a couple of hours for drinks and photos. Therefore the only cost was for the ceremony room and drinks. We then moved on to Boxgrove Village Hall, where we did the catering ourselves. We had a buffet of breads, cheeses, meats, quiches, pastas, salad, fruit, home-made brownies, cupcakes and sweets. We also had filled rolls, tortilla chips and home-made cakes for the evening.

We also saved on my dress and flowers. I bought my dress from eBay, and all bouquets and buttonholes were made by James’ Mum.

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

What is your best money saving tip for other brides on a budget?

Use family and friends skills where they are willing to help! Our Wedding Cake and Flowers were made by friends, our photos were taken by a friend, our favours were cupcakes made by my Step-Mum, and her friends supplied 6 quiches. A lot of family offered to help with the catering, so get people to bring along a cake or dish!

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

Who were your favourite budget wedding suppliers?

Reggie's bars were awesome, we hired them for drinks at the hall. The prices were good and they were friendly and organised. The Works have great invitations for only £5, which can be personalised and accessorized. Moss Bros in Hove were helpful and had great deals and it was cheaper to buy the suits than hire. And of course Wiston House, best value for money and the staff are lovely.

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

Tell us more about how you used DIY to save money on your Wedding?

Apart from food, most of the decorations were also DIY. I spent days with my Mum and Sister making pompoms and bunting. I also bought lanterns and the night before there was about 16 people hanging lanterns and pompoms! Get friends to help, decorating takes longer than it looks! Making tissue paper pompoms is so much cheaper than buying them and they're simple to make. For the bunting I used thick pastel-patterned paper and ribbon from Hobby Craft. Instead of table names, each table had a photo of one of our pets.

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

What did you enjoy most on your wedding day?

Seeing James, the bouncy castle and the speeches! My 5-year old nephew thought the best men's jokes were hilarious, and I was crying with laughter.

£5k Budget Wedding: Karla and James

What would be your best piece of advice for all of our other Budget Bride Company readers?

Enjoy the engagement, enjoy your big day and don't worry! Just relax, make time for each other and it will be a beautiful day.

Real Life Nautical Themed French Wedding – Hannah and RoRo

A Nautical themed wedding in France: Hannah and RoRo

I’m so proud and happy to be sharing this wonderful Nautical Themed French Wedding with you today 😀 One of my most lovely friends, Hannah, married her dream boy on the 3rd August last Summer in Brittany, France.

This gorgeous pair decided to marry in RoRo’s home town of Quiberon which opened up an amazing opportunity for a seaside themed wedding. After searching high and low for a venue that was going to be well suited to their bohemian style, Hannah and RoRo settled on a boat for their venue! What better way to celebrate your vows that afloat in the ocean?

A Nautical themed wedding in France: Hannah and RoRo

The total spend for this amazing nautical venue was 2,000€ and included the hire of the boat along with strawberries and champagne for the guests.

Hannah kept her budget in check by hiring a French Wedding Co-ordinator who was able to negotiate the best possible rates for the London based couple. From liaising with the caterers to setting up the venue for the reception, the Wedding Co-ordinator was definitely one of Hannah’s best money saving tips to share with other brides wanting a destination wedding sans dramas!

Hannah made the most of her budget by choosing her feminine nautical themed bridesmaids dresses from River Island. Hannah chose her own £40 shoes from Next and wore silk flowers in her hair that she had nabbed from her Mum’s bathroom! She also tucked a photo of her Grandpa into her bouquet which was such a nice way for him to be with her on the day.

To transport the guests from the harbor over the reception venue, the couple hired this horse drawn ‘carriage’ to transport their guests for 150€.

At the venue after the wedding, the room was decked with seashells and starfish for favours which cost around £1 each and hundreds of fairy lights which added a magical atmosphere for the guests.

Hannah had a very specific idea for how she wanted to present her table plans and came up with this great idea! The photo frames cost around 20€ and she attached these to shutter style screens at the venue.

Hannah and RoRo decided to celebrate with an amazing multi leveled cheese cake. Just looking at this picture makes me hungry!

Wedding Moodboard Monday – Duck egg Blue and Lace

To me, Duck Egg Blue (or Tiffany Blue as it is often called) is such a beautiful, elegant colour. And matched together with the texture and delicate elegance of lace, I think that you have a wonderful theme.

Lace can be easy to incorporate into your wedding dress, stationery and favours and Duck Egg Blue can make for a gorgeous, sophisticated splash of colour - perhaps in a cute satin belt around your waist, or in your bouquet?

Duck Egg Blue is synonymous with the famous Tiffany shade and perhaps that just adds to the allure...

Todays Wedding Moodboard is all about the Duck Egg Blue and Lace; you can head over to our Pinterest page here for the full lowdown…

Sumptuous on Saturday – Wedding Styling with Through The Looking Glass Events

Wedding Venue Styling with Through The Looking Glass Events

Today we’re having a chat with one of my favourite Wedding Styling Companies – Through The Looking Glass Events 🙂 This energetic and massively inspiring company offer Wedding Venue Styling amongst a myriad of other services including wedding cakes, photo booth styling and product hire. Vintage Teacup Wedding Styling

Kelly tells us a bit more about the ladies behind Through The Looking Glass…

What is your favourite thing about working with brides to be?
Their ideas and excitement, it rubs off on you and inspires you in your work. Every bride has a different vision and this is what makes our job so brilliant - every day throws something new at us! This is the most important day of a couple’s life and for them to pick you to be a part of it is a complete honour. We are seeing a lot more grooms getting involved with the wedding styling as well which is lovely!

Kelly and Melody - Through The Looking Glass Events

Wedding Cake Rustic Hay Bale

What inspires you in your work?
Anything and everything! From the places that we visit to the couples themselves - they set the initial steps for us to draw on our creativity. We like to stay on top of current trends as well, so lots of market research across the globe helps us keep in check of what’s popular and also gives us ideas to build on our wedding styling.

Outdoors wedding Styling and Decorations

Outside wedding decorations

What has been your favourite wedding that you have worked on?
Can I say all of them?! All for different reasons, we have been so lucky to have worked with lots of different themes and wonderful couples.
One of the weddings we styled last year was split over two days; they had an intimate wedding reception at their home with just close family and friends, which was all vintage crockery, lace and romantic signs and then the next day they had a big reception at Corkers Champagne Bar in Northampton with 120 people, which had a navy and diamond theme. A chance for the bride to wear her dress twice and go for two different themes!
Another couple who got married last year at The Three Lakes restaurant in Ware, had clear ideas of the wedding theme they wanted to go for but allowed us to utilise all of the venues’ wonderful spaces to make lots of great photo opportunities! There were colourful lanterns, lots of bunting, vintage fabric, and one of our photo booth stylings which was a big hit.
We have also hosted a gangster themed wedding along with a very bold Alice in Wonderland theme tea party and even a surprise wedding! Anything and everything goes!
We spend a lot of time with our couples planning and creating their day for them, you need to build a relationship to understand their vision and we are lucky to have made many wonderful friends from that planning period.

Outdoors picnic style wedding

Wedding Bunting Decoration

Do you have any wedding styling trend predictions for 2014?
Vintage is still very big this year with lots of lace, soft pinks, neutrals, lace, birdcages and hay bales! For colours we will be seeing lots of navy, mint green, soft pinks, neutrals and royal blue. People are also incorporating a personal interest within their theme such as super heroes, comic books and animals amongst other things. We have some wonderful weddings to style this year!

What would be your top tip to share with any brides to be?
Treasure the build up to the big day; sometimes life can be so busy and stressful that we forget to enjoy the little things in life and the planning and build up to your special day should be treasured as it goes way too quickly!
Along with hiring our products we also offer a set-up service to take that pressure off the couple. This is something we would recommend to all couples. We offer a bridal consultation to discuss all your needs and then we are on hand to the build up to the big day to make sure everything runs smoothly.

When you're not busy working at Through the Looking Glass Events what is your favourite pass time?
Both melody and I have children, so time spent being mum is very important to both of us. Melody enjoys horse riding, baking and exercise, and when I get the chance I am a big fan of musical theatre and I enjoy gracing the stage for a song or two!
